STOP THE TRAFFIK THIS CHRISTMAS...
When on a mild September evening, the band was asked to don their Christmas jumpers, there was complete anarchy. Anarchy I tell you!
This was until we found out why...
The OC charity is releasing a Christmas single called, 'Christmas With You'. This is in aid of the non-profit organisation, STOP THE TRAFFIK, which helps to prevent human trafficking around the world. Something that is all too often overlooked.
A special thank you to Councillor Sean Fielding who dusted off his cornet and became our very own Buddy the Elf to support this wonderful cause.
The track can be listened to here and downloaded from itunes and Amazon music.
Please help us this 2019 Christmas to raise money for this wonderful cause. Thank you!
THE WONDERFUL WIZARD...
On Friday 14th June, the band met in Grotton and, at the time, they had no idea that through all the waiting around, tired lips and wet feet that they would come out with the best results the band has seen yet.
The band played the Wizard by George Allan, completed 9 out of 11 contests and managed to win both Denshaw and Scouthead & Austerlands competitions while also bagging a second place at Dobcross. Our Principal Cornet player, Alan Hobbins, won two soloist prizes, one at Scouthead & Austerlands Contest and the other at Grotton. On his first Whit Friday with the band, our Soprano Cornet player, Will Reynolds, claimed 'best sop' at Scouthead & Austerlands contest.
Overall the band came in second place, beating last years third place. This is the best Whit Friday for the band to date and the MD, John Collins, could not be prouder of the hard work and dedication put in by all.

A TIME TO CELEBRATE...
After a truly spectacular year for the band, a celebration was needed. A celebration of the hard work that every member of the band has put in. A celebration of the outstanding results achieved. A celebration to thank all the players who have helped the band to this point.
A wonderful night was had at the White Hart in Lydgate, not only by the current members of the Oldham Band (Lees), but also past members of the band who came to show their support. Awards were given for achievements throughout the year including:
Bandsman of the Year - Tom Wellings
Best Section - The Back Row Cornets
The Most Improved Player - Ella Bruce
Players Player of the Year - Toni Heywood
Best Contest Performance of the Year - Tom Yeomans
Best Newcomer - Billy Renolds
It is only fitting that after a delicious meal they headed back to the home of the MD and the band room for a night cap... or ten!

THE FIRST SECTION NATIONAL CHAMPIONS OF GREAT BRITAIN...
Oldham Band (Lees) were celebrating last night after being crowned the First Section National Champions of Great Britain. Before the results were given, the adjudicators said there had been a 'clear winner'. This rounds off an incredible year for the band, having already won the Regional Championships and the Senior Cup. MD John Collins said: "I can't believe this. We've been to the Nationals 6 times before, and come 2nd on three occasions. To win on such a challenging piece, playing the way that we did, with every single member of the band giving 100% on stage today was everything I have worked towards over the past 14 years. I couldn't have asked for any more from my players, either in the lead up to this contest or in the performance itself. I can't describe what this means to me and to Oldham Band".
Paul Hindmarsh, who arranged the test piece, later tweeted "Many congrats to all at @OldhamBandLees for a splendid account of King Arthur by Britten to take the 1st Section win this evening. Privilege to hear my brass version played so well. Thank you".

A FINAL JOURNEY...
The Oldham Band (Lees) were in high spirits this morning as they set off for Cheltenham, ready for the 1st Section National Finals tomorrow. Fortunately there was time for a group photo before they left!
The band is no stranger to the National Finals, having qualified in various sections on six previous occasions, but the title of National Champions has proved elusive. However 2018 has already seen Oldham Band crowned 1st section regional champions and winners of the Senior Cup, so everyone is hoping that their hard work over the past few weeks will pay off again.
MD John Collins said: "This year's test piece is a tough one, and it's required 100% focus and commitment from every member of the band to prepare for it. We know it is going to be a hard fought contest, and the standard will be very high, but we will give it everything we've got. We've had an incredible 2018 so far, but this one means so much to us. I want to thank the band for all their work hard and they can have Monday off from rehearsal whatever the result on Sunday!".
More details about the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain can be found here, including information about the 1st section test piece, King Arthur - Scenes from the Radio Drama by Benjamin Britten arr. Paul Hindmarsh. The 1st Section National Final takes place on Sunday 16 September 2018.

SUMMER BREAK AND THE STORY SO FAR.....
As Oldham Band (Lees) prepares to take a well-earned summer break, 2018 is already proving to be a momentous year. Highlights of course include their emphatic win in the 1st section North West Area Championships in February, followed by victory in the Senior Cup, and promotion to the Grand Shield, at the Spring Festival in May. Two weeks later, the Whit Friday Band Contest saw Oldham Band finish an impressive 3rd place overall, missing out on 2nd by the narrowest of margins. All this has helped Oldham Band reach 64th in the world rankings, another outstanding achievement.
On top of this Oldham Band has still found time to put on a concert of swing classics with guest vocalist Matt Corrigan, move into a new band room, and be chosen as one of the charities promoted through the Co-ops' Local Community Fund. Click on the link below to find out more about this initiative and how you can support the band.
The band will have a few weeks off before preparations start in earnest for the National Championships in Cheltenham in September. MD John Collins said: "It's been an amazing year so far for the band. I think we are all ready for a rest, but I can't wait to get to work on the National Final test piece!".

98TH BRITISH OPEN SPRING FESTIVAL
2018 is already proving to be a memorable year for Oldham Band (Lees). After being crowned North West Regional 1st Section Champions in February, it was a triumphant return to the Winter Gardens on 12 May as the band stormed to victory, winning the Senior Cup. Playing the demanding Diadem of Gold (G. Bailey arr Frank Wright) MD John Collins said "I still can't believe we have won the Senior Cup! This is the biggest win in the band's history. I knew the band was playing well and everyone has given 100% commitment in the lead up to the contest but it was such a hard piece to play. Special mention has to go to Ben on sop who gave a phenomenal performance but every member of the band played their part perfectly on the day. This is an incredible result!".
4barsrest said of the performance: "The Lancastrians certainly relished their 'Diadem' reading today and it was one that epitomised the hallmarks of the ensemble they have become. Full bloodied, purposeful and intense, nothing was left on stage as the players gave their all".
It's now straight back to rehearsals as the band prepares for the Whit Friday Band Contest on Friday 25 May.

98TH BRITISH OPEN SPRING FESTIVAL
Oldham Band (Lees) have been busy preparing for this year's Spring Festival, due to be held at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool on Saturday 12 May 2018. Competing in the Senior Cup, the test piece is the demanding Diadem of Gold (G. Bailey arr Frank Wright). MD John Collins said "This piece has proved extremely challenging and even our more experienced players have had their work cut out preparing for this contest. But as usual the band have given it their all and I just want to thank them all for their hard work and commitment over the past few weeks. Whatever happens on Saturday I know every member of the band will give 100% on stage - but of course we would love to win!".
More details about the Spring Festival can be found here and for a preview of the piece click on the YouTube link opposite to hear Black Dyke's performing it at the 1977 British Open.

It might have taken a few attempts, but Oldham Band (Lees) are celebrating after being crowned the 2018 North West Regional first section champions. The band was nervously confident going into the contest, after their winning performance on the same piece at Preston last month. But up against a strong (and bigger) field, Oldham Band knew it had to give its very best performance if it was going to come out on top. There was no doubt that this year's test piece, James Curnow's Brass Metamorphosis, was challenging, but in their remarks before the final results were given, the adjudicators said there had been a "clear winner". Special mention was also made of the quality of the playing by Harrison Heeley on solo euphonium and Alan Hobbins on soprano. MD John Collins said: "It hasn't really sunk in yet - this is the one we really wanted and all the hard work over the past few weeks has paid off. 7 members from the original band I started in 2004 were on stage with me yesterday, along with several players that have come up through our junior band. I am so proud of what we have achieved. Cheltenham here we come!". Congratulations also to Holly Raynor and Jordan Hall who won the Best Percussion prize.
Oldham Band (Lees) wish to congratulate Freckleton who will be joining them in Cheltenham in September, and all the other bands who competed with them on Sunday, especially local neighbours Boarshurst who came a fantastic 4th in their first year in this section.

SUCCESS CONTINUES IN 2018!
After finishing a respectable 4th at Butlin's a couple of weeks ago, it was back to winning ways for Oldham Band (Lees) as they secured the first section title at Brass at the Guild in Preston. Playing the area set-piece Brass Metamorphosis, adjudicator Paul Andrews said the winner was "…the band that had a lot of control, poise and quality about their playing". MD John Collins said: "This is a tremendous result. The band has worked so hard preparing for this contest on what is a really tricky piece. We came hoping for some constructive feedback to help with our preparations for the Regional, but this result will give the band extra momentum in the lead up to Blackpool. I am so proud of the whole band - I couldn't have asked for any more from my players". The band also won the prize for Best Soprano, following an outstanding performance by Alan Hobbins.

NO REST FOR THE WICKED!
The start of 2018 has already been a busy time for Oldham Band (Lees). After competing in the Butlin's Mineworkers Open Brass Band Festival, there was no time to rest (and recover) before rehearsals started again to prepare for Brass at the Guild and the North West Regionals. This year's 1st section area test piece is Brass Metamorphosis by James Curnow. As the name implies this piece is a set of variations based on an original theme. It has proved a challenging test for the band but MD John Collins is pleased with the progress so far: "The band delivered a great performance of Peter Graham's Renaissance at Butlin's to help us secure 4th in a very strong, and large, field. They have gone straight back into the rehearsal room, switched focus and have worked so hard on the area test piece. Brass at the Guild provides us with a great opportunity to measure our progress so far and receive invaluable feedback ahead of our trip to Blackpool at the end of February".

PREPARATIONS FOR BUTLINS 2018
It was straight back into the rehearsal room this week for the band after a well-deserved break over the festive period, as final preparations began for next weekend's Butlins Mineworkers Open National Brass Band Festival. This will be the second time Oldham Band (Lees) has entered the contest, once again held at Butlin's Skegness, and after finishing a respectable third last year, the band is looking to improve on this result. Renaissance by Peter Graham is this year's first section test piece, and is a sequel to his much celebrated Shine as the Light. The band has thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the piece and are looking forward to the whole weekend. |
A CONCERT OF REMEMBRANCE
Oldham Band (Lees) were honoured to be asked to perform with Saddleworth Male Voice Choir this year at their annual A Concert of Remembrance on Saturday 11 November 2017. Playing to a full house, the audience were treated to a varied programme, from a beautiful rendition of Arthur Sullivan's The Lost Chord and a wonderful adaptation of the Russian hymn Tiebie Paiom by SMVC, to Elgar's Nimrod from The Enigma Variations and the rousing 633 Squadron by the band. The final section of the night, The Act of Remembrance, proved a fitting tribute with the choir and band coming together to show their respect through such classics as Nightfall in Camp, Abide with Me, and Jerusalem. MD John Collins said: "It was a great privilege for the band to be asked to perform on such a significant occasion, and it was a pleasure to share the stage with such a fine choir. This really was one of the most enjoyable and moving events we have been part of." More information about Saddleworth Male Voice Choir can be found here. |
LAST NIGHT OF THE RIBBLE VALLEY PROMS
Oldham Band (Lees) enjoyed performing a mixed programme at the Last Night of the Ribble Valley Proms at Chatburn on Friday 15 September 2017. Playing to a full house, there was something for everyone. The first half of the night featured the music of Disney, with favourites from Snow White, the Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean to name just a few. The night ended with the classic prom favourites of Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, and Land of Hope and Glory. The evening's entertainment was made even more special by guest soprano Elizabeth Phillips. Elizabeth had joined the band for a couple of rehearsals ahead of the performance and MD John Collins said "It was great to work with Elizabeth; not only is she an amazing singer but she was a true professional and so easy for the band to work with". |

WHIT FRIDAY BAND CONTEST 2017
Oldham Band (Lees) are celebrating after achieving their best Whit Friday result ever, finishing an impressive 3rd overall. 129 bands took part in this year's Saddleworth contest, and the band saw off some stiff competition, finishing ahead of Black Dyke, Hepworth and Milnrow. The band choose to stick once again with their Whit Friday favourite The Wizard and it did not disappoint. MD John Collins said "Our preparation this year has been perfect and I couldn't have asked for any more from the band on the day. Every member of the band gave 110% and it has shown in our amazing results. We finished in the top five at 6 out of 7 of the contests we took part in, and winning at Uppermill for the first time was the icing on the cake. It was an amazing Whit Friday and I can't wait for next year!". All the results can be found here or read the report on 4barsrest here. A date for your diary, the Whit Friday Band Contest for 2018 will be held on Friday 25 May 2018. |
GETTING READY FOR WHIT FRIDAY BAND CONTEST 2017
It's that time of year again, and Oldham Band (Lees) are busy preparing for what has been described as "the greatest free show on Earth". Friday 9 June 2017 will see hundreds of brass banders descend on the villages of Saddleworth to take part in the Whit Friday Band Contest. MD John Collins said "The band looks forward to this all year. It is really hard work but such an amazing event to be part of and we love it!". Hoping to improve on last year's 6th place overall, the band is also keeping its fingers crossed for fine weather. See here for more details |

2017 SPRING FESTIVAL
After a really enjoyable concert at Denshaw Community Centre on Saturday 25 March 2017, it was back to the band room this week for Oldham Band (Lees) as they continued their preparations for the Spring Festival. Competing for the first time in the Senior Cup after last year's terrific result saw them promoted to the second tier, this year's test piece is the challenging Fragile Oasis by Peter Meechan. It was commissioned by Leyland Brass Band for their appearance at the 2013 European Brass Band Championships. It is based on a video posted by 'Fragile Oasis', a collection of men and women who live and work on the International Space Station. Each of the five sections of the piece relates to an aspect of the video which features all kinds of amazing views from space. MD John Collins said: "The band loves the Spring Festival and it really is a highlight of the contesting season for us. They are working hard and focussed on the piece".

2017 NORTH WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The contesting season continued with a trip to Blackpool for Oldham Band (Lees) on 26 February to take part in the North West Regional Championships. It was an early start for the band, with the first section starting at 9.30am. Drawn to play 12th, this year's test piece was Philip Sparke's The Land of the Long White Cloud. Although everyone agreed it was a challenging work, the band had enjoyed the preparation and hard work in the build up to the contest, and it paid off with a superb performance which received an enthusiastic response from the audience. Awarded third place on the day, the band was very disappointed to have narrowly missed out on place at the National Finals. MD John Collins said: "I couldn't have asked for more from the band today - they were incredible and every person gave me 110%. Of course we are gutted that we will not be going to the National Finals this year but we will have a week off and then start getting ready for our first appearance in the Senior Cup". |
BRASS AT THE GUILD 2017
Following on from their success in Skegness only two weeks ago at the Butlins Mineworkers Open National Brass Band Festival, it was another great contesting weekend again for Oldham Band (Lees) as they came second in the First Section at Brass at the Guild in Preston. Seen by many as an invaluable opportunity to get adjudicator feedback on the regional test piece ahead of the trip to Blackpool at the end of February, the band gave its first public performance of Philip Sparke's Land of the Long White Cloud. A challenging piece, MD John Collins was pleased with the overall performance of the band on the day, and found the general comments made by adjudicator Michael Fowles to all bands, and more specifically, the critique offered in his written remarks to be extremely beneficial: "The feedback we received will inform the work we do now in the run-up to the Regionals in Blackpool in a few weeks time. The band has had to work incredibly hard to make sure we were ready for this contest given we were competing on a different piece in Skegness only two weeks ago, but they have risen to the challenge once again. I am especially thrilled that we have won the best basses prize and best soloist for a first class performance by Alan Hobbins on flugel horn".

SUCCESS IN SKEGNESS!
Oldham Band (Lees) are celebrating after coming 3rd in the 1st Section at the 2017 Butlins Mineworkers Open National Brass Band Festival. In a contest that lasted over six hours and with 24 bands entered in the section, this was always going to be a tough competition. However, the band gave a strong performance of the demanding Fantasy for Brass Band by Sir Malcolm Arnold, which 4BarsRest said showed "their musical potential on stage" and commended MD John Collins for bringing a "real vibrancy to the performance. The dynamics and tempos were first rate". There was no sign of any post-Christmas lethargy and this result will now help to spur the band on with their preparations for the Regional Championships in February. John said he was "so proud of the band and the hard work they have all put in for this contest and hopefully this will provide perfect momentum as we work towards the north west area". |

PREPARATIONS FOR BUTLINS 2017
It was straight back into the rehearsal room this week for the band after a well-deserved break over the festive period, as final preparations began for next weekend's Butlins Mineworkers Open National Brass Band Festival. This will be the first time Oldham Band (Lees) has entered the contest, held at Butlin's Skegness. The first section test piece, Fantasy for Brass Band by Sir Malcolm Arnold, was originally written for the National Championships of Great Britain in 1974. Although a challenging work, testing both technique and musicianship, the band has thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the piece and are looking forward to the experience (and weekend break!).

OLDHAM CHORAL SOCIETY CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Oldham Band (Lees) rounded off this year's festive engagements with one of their favourite events, the Christmas Concert with Oldham Choral Society. Held at Oldham Parish Church on Friday 16 December 2016, the programme offered a varied mix of traditional and newer pieces, including a beautiful composition by a member of the choir. MD John Collins said "Oldham Band are delighted once again to have been invited by the Oldham Choral Society to join them for this wonderful event. It is the last thing we do as a full band before having a well earned break, and is a perfect way to wish everyone a Merry Christmas". |
IT'S CHRISTMAS!
Oldham Band (Lees) started off the 2016 Christmas season by providing the festive music for Father Christmas and his team of real reindeers in the Reindeer Parade in Oldham Town Centre on Saturday 12 November 2016. Despite the weather, the crowds lined the streets to welcome Santa, accompanied by the cast of Oldham Coliseum's pantomime and other Christmas characters. Following the parade, the band performed some carols to round off a perfect start to the festive season. |
BRASSED OFF!
Oldham Band (Lees) enjoyed a rehearsal with a difference last week when they were visited by cast members of Oldham Coliseum's forthcoming production of Brassed Off. The band are one of four local brass bands that are set to appear when the play opens for its four week run next month and Oldham Band (Lees) takes its turn from Tuesday 20 - Saturday 24 September 2016. Although playing a demanding repertoire made famous in the original film by Grimethorpe Colliery Band, the band are excited to be involved in what will certainly be an entertaining and enjoyable show. |

SUMMER CONCERT 24 JULY 2016
Dobcross Band Club was the setting for Oldham Band (Lees) final concert of the summer, before having a well-deserved break. Playing to a packed audience, the band performed a varied programme, split unusually into three sections. There were solo performances from both the more experienced players and a couple of new, up and coming members, one of whom, Phoebe Collins, made her solo debut playing Share my Yoke, while proud dad conducted the rest of the band. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the performance by Alex Temple-Heald of Ney Rosauro's Concerto for Marimba and Brass Band. Performing without music, Alex's rendition of this challenging piece in four movements was flawless, and marked a fitting end to Alex's time with Oldham Band before he starts at the Royal College in London in September. MD John Collins said, "Alex has been a fantastic member of Oldham Band for the past 4 years and he will be greatly missed. We know he is going to go on to achieve great things in his musical career and we wish him all the very best. He is, of course, welcome back anytime!". |

WHIT FRIDAY BAND CONTEST 2016
Oldham Band (Lees) enjoyed yet another successful Whit Friday, finishing 5th overall and placing no lower than that in any of the 8 contests it took part in, including a 2nd place at Uppermill. Marching to Army of the Nile, the band once again chose to play The Wizard. Despite rain setting in later in the evening, the band continued to deliver a polished performance concluding with a 4th at its last stop in Scouthead. Also of note was the award of best cornet at the Lees contest. MD John Collins remarked: "Coming only a week after the great result at the Spring Festival, this is a real demonstration of the commitment and hard work of all the players. The margin between 3rd and 5th was so small this year that we almost secured a top 3 finish, but that will definitely be our aim for 2017!

DURHAM MINERS GALA 2015
On Saturday 11th July 2015, Oldham Band Lees took part in the Durham Miners Gala for the first time. The coach left Lees at 4.00am, amazingly with all members accounted for, as the march traditionally starts early in Durham. Second man down, Tom Gibb, originally from the North East, organised for the band to be involved and with the sun shining, the band entertained the crowds with their rendition of Hawaii Five-O and the traditional hymn tune Irish Blessing. Toni Heywood on flugel horn was amazing all day with her jazzy solo in Hawaii Five-O, as were the percussion team of Alex Temple-Heald and Chris Varney, and the quartet, led by Chris Sanders, was a beautiful opening for a fine performance from the whole band. It was an incredibly long day but one that everyone thoroughly enjoyed and hope to do again next year.

WHIT FRIDAY BAND CONTEST 2015
Friday 29th May 2015 saw Oldham Band (Lees) set out once again for the annual Whit Friday Band Contest, in and around the villages of Saddleworth. There was a great buzz of excitement as the band started their afternoon, playing first at Grotton. They marched to their traditional choice Army of the Nile, before giving an assured performance of The Wizard. Several contests reported record entries this year, which perhaps accounted for the large queues in some locations, meaning that the band were forced to miss out a couple of the contests. However, it didn't stop them going from strength to strength culminating in an impressive 1st place at Diggle contest, with best euphonium being awarded to Harrison Healey, and 4th place at Uppermill. The band were especially relieved that, although very cold, the rain held off until the end of the night!

Although disappointed with the overall result, the Band were happy with their preparation for the contest, with what was a challenging piece for all sections, and are looking forward to coming back stronger next year.

NORTH WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015, BLACKPOOL WINTER GARDENS
1st March 2015 saw Oldham Band (Lees) head off to Blackpool to compete in the Championship section of the North West Regional Contest for the first time in their 10 year history. Playing the challenging test piece The Torchbearer by Peter Graham, the band had begun their preparation the previous month by competing at Brass at the Guild, Preston. Although there were some nerves on the day, the band's performance earned them a respectable 8th place. MD John Collins said "I am very pleased with how the band responded to the challenges of life in the Championship section. Although perhaps our performance on the day wasn't as good as I know we are capable of playing it, this has given us a great foundation on which to build. And we will be back stronger next year!".

PREPARATIONS UNDERWAY FOR NORTH WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The start of 2015 sees Oldham Band (Lees) prepare for the North West Regional Championships in March, where they will be competing in the Championship section for the first time in their history. The test piece is the challenging The Torchbearer by Peter Graham. Originally commissioned by Kapitol Promotions and the Federation of Australasian Brass Bands as the test piece for the 2009 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and the FABB Open Contest respectively, The Torchbearer was initiated by the Federation's Music Advisor, Professor David King, whose support and encouragement for the idea of a piece commemorating the 20th anniversary of Eric Ball's death was greatly appreciated. The variations are based upon the first phrase of the trio from Eric Ball's Salvation Army march, Torchbearers.
Eric Ball will be remembered as a composer whose classic works for brass shine through with integrity and sincerity. Peter has been no less sincere in his efforts to pay musical tribute to the 20th century's most influential composer of brass band music.
The band will also be competing at the Brass at the Guild, Preston contest with this piece as part of their preparation.

WHIT FRIDAY BAND CONTEST 2014
It might have fallen on Friday 13th this year, but it definitely wasn't unlucky for Oldham Band (Lees), who finished in 9th place overall in this year's band contest. A last minute change to their usual route meant the band were able to compete in all 10 of the Saddleworth villages and they even managed a visit to Stalybridge this year. Marching to Army of the Nile, the band kicked off proceedings in Grotton at 4pm, performing The Wizard as their chosen piece. The loudest reception was of course when they visited Lees, but once again it was a fantastic event and worth all the hard work that had gone into preparing for it.

Rehearsals are currently underway for the annual Whit Friday Band Contest, which this year falls on Friday 13th June 2014. After winning their first ever contest at Grotton in 2013, the band has decided to stick with The Wizard again this year. The Band are still deciding whether to stay with the traditional Saddleworth contest or try the Tameside contest for the first time.

2014 SPRING FESTIVAL – SENIOR TROPHY
Oldham Band (Lees) competed in the Senior Trophy for the third year running last weekend in Blackpool (26th April 2014), and although disappointed with their 6th place, the band were very pleased with their performance on the day.The general consensus was that the Les Francs Juges (Judges of the Secret Court) was one of the most challenging pieces the band had tackled to date but that the hard work and commitment of all members, particularly over the Easter holidays, had paid off with the band delivering a strong and musical interpretation of the Berlioz overture. MD John Collins said “Although bitterly disappointed not have gained promotion to the Senior Cup, I was extremely pleased with the way the band played and with the performance they gave. We love to fight again and will be trying our
best at the Senior Trophy again next year”.

CHELTENHAM HERE WE COME!
Oldham Band (Lees) were celebrating yesterday after securing a place in this year's National Finals in Cheltenham, after a magnificent performance in the 2014 North West Regional Championships, which saw them awarded 2nd place by the adjudicators. In what was a difficult section, the band had only just made it to Blackpool in time for the draw after being stranded on the motorway following the closure of the M61 earlier in the day. However, all the hard work that had gone in to preparing for this contest paid off with a strong performance of this year's test piece, Cry of the Mountain by Howard Lorriman. Once again William Bartley played what 4barsrest described as 'a stunning euph solo'. MD John Collins said "I am very pleased and proud of my 'new' Oldham Band. We have managed to do something we have been trying to do for 5 years now and it has fortunately coincided with our 10th anniversary. We are now looking forward with relish to the Championship section". FIRST CAROLLING JOB OF THE SEASON DECEMBER 2013
A few of us got together to start the busy Christmas period off with some carolling at a local supermarket. It was made all the more festive by the Christmas tree sellers outside the main entrance and the shoppers obviously enjoyed our music, giving very generously. |
NORTHERN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP ST. HELENS 2013
